About the Inspiration Lab Artist-in-Residence program (iLAB)

The Inspiration Lab Artist-in-Residency Program at the University of the Arts (iLAB) provides emerging and mid-career artists a unique opportunity to create and develop new work in a dynamic and supportive environment. The program offers selected artists access to the university’s state-of-the-art facilities and a stipend toward expenses during their residency.

The emerging and mid-career artists—selected by a rotating committee of arts professionals, such as curators, academics and critics—receive critical support to reflect, experiment and produce compelling new work.

This residency program provides 10 studios and two accompanying installation and exhibition spaces on the third floor of Anderson Hall, an eight-story building on South Broad Street devoted to visual art, design and museum studies.

As a means to elevate and sustain relationships with the UArts and the greater Philadelphia community, all artists in residence can explore connections with ongoing courses and provide public presentations of their work. Through these residencies, a wide range of creative disciplines intersect and cross-pollinate, reflecting UArts’ commitment to interdisciplinary arts education. Artists with proven histories of creative practice from disciplines such as visual arts, new media, performance, design, film, moving images, writing, choreography and music composition participate in the iLAB Artist-in-Residence program.

During the residency, artists are encouraged to engage with the university community and participate in public events, lectures and exhibitions. The program fosters creative exploration and interdisciplinary collaboration, giving artists the resources and support they need to push the boundaries of their practices and pursue new artistic directions.

The program is open to artists working in a wide range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, performance and sound art. Applicants are selected based on their work’s strength, potential for growth and innovation and ability to contribute to the university community.

Through the Inspiration Lab Artist-in-Residency Program, the University of the Arts aims to support and nurture the next generation of creative thinkers and makers, while providing opportunities for students to forge new pathways for learning and cultivate relationships with working artists.
